For example, teaching a kid to stay in their zone, attack the ball in their zone, and help on weak side is much much easier than teaching them the variability of playing in front, don’t chase, switching, play back, help but but watch you man etc. Zone allows one to teach the fundamentals of defense in a manageable format to those new and newer to the game. It’s effective for many reasons throughout ones basketball life – and the professional level is the only place it doesn’t exist – so yes, teaching an offense how to drive and pass against a zone is essential and valuable as well. You’ve never taught youth.

A real zone D rotates towards the ball and players end up having to play defense on the ball. They should learn how to properly close out and defend. Please stop telling people zone D is bad for youth unless you give all the facts. We always pressure the ball while in zone.
