Little League Baseball Player Hugs Distraught Pitcher from Opposing Team
This past Tuesday, August 9th, a scary play occurred during a Little League regional tournament in Waco, Texas.
Pitcher Kaiden Shelton of Pearland, Texas, accidentally lost control of a pitch that hit the opposing hitter, Isaiah Jarvis, straight in the head, instantly knocking him to the ground. But while Jarvis was clutching his head in great pain from the ground, something beautiful happened.
A few moments later, right after Jarvis recovered and proceeded to first base, pitcher Shelton was still considerably shaken up over what just occurred, and it was clear he was getting emotional.
Noticing that Shelton was distraught, Jarvis walked from first base to meet Shelton at the mound and comforted him with a big hug. He told him, “Hey, you’re doing great. Let’s go.”
It was a stand-up display of sportsmanship, one that you don’t see very often in today’s sports. Ballpark fans in attendance and fans online everywhere quickly took notice and applauded.
According to CBS News, Jarvis told said that if he were in Shelton’s shoes, he “would be pretty scared, too.”
“If you’re throwing hard and you just hit somebody in the head, it’s got to be a scary thing,” he said. “So, I just wanted to go over there and make sure he was all right. Make sure he knows that I’m all right. And really just encourage him.”
Pearland ended up going on to win the game with a final score of 9-4 and advanced to the Little League World Series, but both teams and fans experienced a win for sportsmanship and a lesson all athletes need to remember.
