Guy Ritchie is writing, directing and producing the action-adventure feature King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, revisiting one of history’s most iconic and enduring figures. Watch the trailer below.
Thought to have been a 6th century British king, Arthur is credited with defending the realm against Saxon invaders. Richie’s revisionist adaptation will highlight young Arthur’s edgier side, depicting him as a street kid with a strong survival instinct who’s initially unaware of his royal lineage. After grabbing the magic sword Excalibur and realizing that he is destined to be king, Arthur decides to join the rebellion to defeat the tyrant Vortigern, who killed his parents and stole Arthur’s crown.
Charlie Hunnam of TV’s Sons of Anarchy, stars in the title role. The impressive cast also features Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Eric Bana (Lone Survivor), Katie McGrath (Supergirl), Astrid Berges-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) and David Beckham.
We’ve seen Ritchie revamp classic franchises like Sherlock Holmes by putting his own unique spin on the material, and he plans to do the same with this character. Explaining his fresh take on King Arthur to Entertainment Weekly, he said: “I think where the pitfall has often been is trying to make King Arthur bland and nice, and nice and bland. The two qualities make rather compatible bed companions. Unfortunately, they’re not interesting to watch. Luke Skywalker was always the most uninteresting character in Star Wars because he’s the good guy. Good guys are boring.”
Inspired by Thomas Mallory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, the screenplay was co-written by Joby Harold (Robin Hood) and Lionel Wigram (Sherlock Holmes), from a story by Joby Harold and David Dobkin.
The film will potentially be a franchise starter for a six-picture series. In addition to this project, Ritchie will reportedly direct the highly anticipated upcoming films, Sherlock 3 and Aladdin.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will hit theaters in 2D and IMAX on March 24.
